Letter from the Dean

Dear SoB Students and Graduates,
Spring is the time of new beginnings! Birds are returning. Daffodils are blooming. Warm weather entices us to spend as much time outdoors as possible. It becomes increasingly difficult to sit inside at the computer and write a paper, discussion posts or work math problems. Keep in mind that earning your degree is also a new beginning for you. The knowledge you gain from obtaining your degree can and will open new doors and opportunities for you to grow. The amount of time you spend on your studies is but a raindrop in a bucket compared to the transformation you will experience. Here are a few suggestions to help you continue to stay motivated this spring:
  1. Take your study materials outside with you. Take your books with you to appointments or soccer practice.
  2. Reward yourself for completing your work early in the week so that you have the weekend to enjoy with your family.
  3. Get the family involved. Reward them for help around the house or proofreading papers.
  4. Prepare your work area ahead of time. Set an egg timer for 30 minutes to 1 hour and concentrate on getting as much work as possible done during that time. Minimize interruptions by turning off your cell phone and the television.
Remember the time you spend in school is finite. The possibilities associated with your education are endless!
Regards,
Danette Lance, PhD
Dean, School of Business

IN HER OWN WORDS:
1.    I was born in Louisiana and lived in Lafayette until I was about 5 years old. My life changed drastically when my family was asked to move overseas to Cairo, Egypt. Although I do not remember much from our time in Cairo, I do have a few vivid memories including one terrifying experience with a camel. My sister and I were posing for a photo on a seated camel when all of a sudden the slobbery beast decided to take off running! I didn't realize it at the time, but now I know that the camel episode took place in front of the Egyptian Pyramids! 2.    At age 9, my family and I moved to a small town in Wyoming right outside of Yellowstone National Park. I love Wyoming and truly appreciate wide-open spaces...and a little country music. 3.    While pursuing my BA in Communication Marketing, I went on a life-changing spring break trip to Lyon, France. The culture and food were amazing and I fell in love with the French language. I now spend many an evening practicing with Rosetta Stone.4.    Even though I consider myself a "small town girl," I thoroughly enjoy Denver. I've had many interesting experiences living in Capitol Hill, met great people, and more importantly, found an opportunity to give back to my community.  I volunteer at the homeless coffee shop on my block and find the experience quite fascinating. So many interesting conversations are shared over a cup of coffee and I have started a blog to document my experiences. 5.     On the weekends, you can catch me at a yoga class, having brunch with friends, trying new DIY crafts from Pinterest, walking my little dog Olivia, or just curled up with my Kindle.
