Dear john,

FINCA Uganda Solar Client
How often after dinner do you find yourself on the computer finishing up a little work? I bet you don't think twice about the lights staying on while you work. But poor entrepreneurs around the world often have to wrap up their day at dusk because they do not have access to reliable electricity.

An exciting new FINCA loan program is beginning to change this fact for our hard-working FINCA clients. Our new micro-energy loans lets our small business owners take out micro-loans to purchase and install small solar power systems that will keep the lights burning bright in a small home or shop.

I hope I can count on your support today to make these micro-energy loans available to more Village Bankers around the world.

Rose Nassimbwa owns a small restaurant and tailor shop in rural Uganda. This spring she received a micro-energy loan to purchase a small solar home system. It has completely changed her family's life.

She doesn't have to rush home from work to prepare dinner for her family before the sun goes down. She and her children can enjoy a meal together and then she can help the children do their homework. Just months ago, this was impossible. Homework, if done at all, was done by candlelight.

She can also charge her cell phone each day, so she can contact clients and suppliers in a timely manner.

The upcoming Christmas holiday period is the busiest season for Rose's tailor shop. This year she is expecting to do especially well as she is bringing her sewing machine home each evening and preparing extra inventory to sell. Before her solar system was installed, she just didn’t have enough light to sew in the evenings.

But this year she is planning to use her increased income from the holiday season to expand her business. Rose hopes to invest in a second solar system for her restaurant. She thinks with cheerful, welcoming light, her restaurant will draw quite a dinner crowd.

Please make your tax-deductible gift today to help entrepreneurs like Rose use micro-energy loans to grow their businesses.

Amassco.

We started our pilot micro-energy loan program in Uganda because of the requests from so many of our Village Banking members. They needed affordable, reliable electricity access to grow their businesses.

These small solar systems fit our members' needs perfectly. They are easy to install and maintain. They are sustainable, and environmentally friendly. And they are affordable to boot: a 50-watt system requires an investment of about $425 – which a FINCA micro-energy loan finances.

Once an entrepreneur like Rose repays her initial micro-energy loan, her electricity costs are $0.

Homes powered with solar tend to create a healthier environment – especially for children – by removing fumes from kerosene, charcoal or wood in poorly ventilated homes. Children are able to study more and do better in school. Accidents from using candles or kerosene lamps are eliminated.

Please do what you can today to provide FINCA with the resources to make micro-energy loans available to as many hard-working entrepreneurs as possible.

As you well understand, small loans mean big changes for so many. I thank you for all you do to help give poor entrepreneurs the chance to build a better life for themselves and their children.

Sincerely,
Rupert W. Scofield
