Tier 5 unemployment Extension: Could Job Corps be of help to the 99ers?
By Samantha.Torrence / September 9th, 2010

Some of the main complaints 99ers have are, not being able to get a job, and nowhere for their family to live if they lose their home. Despite the massive amount of networking and lobbying an extension in unemployment benefits still remains uncertain, and with that uncertainty 99ers a looking towards a bleak future.

With that in mind it seems imperative for states and local governments to step up and offer some form of help that includes securing a job and providing housing.

Job Corps may be a viable option to help the unemployed get back on their feet again, albeit in an unconventional fashion. Job Corps is a program that houses 16-24 year olds while sending them to school to learn valuable trade skills.

While on the program teens and young adults are not only given housing but an allowance for clothing and rewards for achievements. While the current program is geared towards a younger worker, could it be tweaked to include all ages and even help house families?

The Job Corps program tends to focus on teaching young and the “at risk” a trades skill. It is designed to steer children and young adults off the streets and towards a successful path. Would the 99ers be compatible with the current program?

The answer is no, 99ers do not need lessons in basic life skills, nor moralistic and societal direction. Rather the program would have to be altered to include different lessons while the trade skill is acquired.

Currently 99ers need a compassionate and uplifting approach to the new found lives they may have to lead in the future. Classes on self-worth and morale would be beneficial as the toll of unemployment has destroyed the confidence and spirit of many Americans.

Instead of rules and regulations about drugs, the proper way to dress, and basic work ethics 99ers could use a different tone that shows respect to their accomplishments and establishes a sense of dignity that may have been slipped away through years of uncertainty.

Maybe a new type of Job Corps geared towards the unemployed could help, but will it be utilized? It all depends in the approach and how restrictive and regulatory the government becomes in providing the program. Mandating drug tests as Orrin Hatch suggested, or alluding to the program as welfare would most certainly doom it before it starts.

However promoting it as part of an unemployment package as a rehabilitative step and as part of the insurance would cause more favor to be guided in its direction. Maybe a refashioned type of Job Corps could help and maybe it is just a half-baked idea, but the discussion this idea creates can lead to maybe better plans for the future of the unemployed in America.
